A news report today revealed that Subway, the sandwich not the method of transportation, is catching up to McDonalds in terms of worldwide locations. Subway is nearing 31,800 shops while McDonald's has 32,158 total restaurants.

Since we devoted some time over the summer sussing out the Most Shocking McDonald's Locations in the World, we're guessing that Subway must be found in some pretty shocking locations around the world too.

In the Subway Flickr pool, we already see Subways in Devon, London and inside a windmill in Germany. The article from AdAge has photos of some worldwide Subway locations but we know there are many, many, many more to discuss. So let us know which Subways we should check out!

Subway Locations

It seems like the format of Subway stores and the lack of equipment like fryers allows them to be more easily located in smaller spaces, likely lowering the costs for franchisees to open new locations and allowing them to be more easily co-located with other businesses like gas stations.

St. Anthony, Idaho doesn't have a McDonalds, Burger King or Taco Bell but has had this Subway located inside a gas station 14 years ago when I most recently visited:

A quick search reveals that Nome, Alaska is another town with a Subway but not a McDonald's.

I'm sure there are some "shocking" locations out there but I think the size requirements of a McDonald's or a Burger King have quite a bit to do with why you'll find Subway in smaller spaces and in smaller communities.

Other locations.

There are also franchised Subway locations in unique private places which are operated by food service companies like Aramark. I hear there is a heavily-protected location at the U.S. Capitol, and there is also a location in the Utilidor (utility tunnels) beneath Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.
