If the London storefront known as The School of Life is "an apothecary for the mind," then what they prescribe are cures for boredom, sluggish creativity, and an overall feeling of being "stuck." Tough times these may be, and call us equally tough for saying so, but we've grown tired of hearing the same tired moan and groan of pessimism.

Travel is about exploration, not least of all self-exploration, so we were excited to hear about this small shop offering big ideas—a place to break the touristy routine of museum visits and double-decker buses and get a little more out of our next London experience.

The School of Life is a neighborhood abode where locals come to take unique classes in five different categories: Love, Politics, Work, Play, and Family. Find yourself getting pissy when you go into the office every morning? Maybe it's time to break free of your workday habits and push yourself to think outside of the proverbial box.

The School offers classes in how to do so, with speakers like noted travel writer and philosopher Alain de Botton making appearances and leading discussions. Non-locals are welcome as much as the East Enders raving about the space, and they've already garnered the thumbs up from the New York Times and tastemaking UK publication Monocle.

Even if you don't have time to take one of their many titillating courses while you're in town, you can still stop by the shop to pick up an inspiring memento from your time abroad, like uplifting aphorisms printed on posters and postcards.

Finally, something to replace that sad, half-drowned kitten photograph on the cubicle wall.
