Important Scientific Experimentation: Ewan McGregor Tests the Coriolis Effect

September 19, 2009 at 2:28 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

Ewan McGregor has been a pretty busy guy during the past couple of years, appearing in nearly 50 movies and still finding time to take marathon motorcycle treks across Russia, Eastern Europe, and Africa. And while he and his friend Charley Boorman have gotten into plenty of scrapes and dustups along the way, they've also found time to conduct important scientific research.

In this video, the duo rides to the equator in Kenya to find out which direction water swirls while going down a drain in the northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, and right on the equator itself. With the aid of a few local companions, he captures on camera the dramatic swirling of water through a makeshift plastic funnel in the three locations.

In McGregor's experiment, the toothpicks dropped in the water clearly rotated in a clockwise direction while in the northern hemisphere, while they rotated counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. And when they straddled the line, the water just fell straight down and the toothpicks didn't go anywhere.

Was this experiment scientifically valid? Probably not, but who cares? It's interesting enough that a prolific actor like Ewan McGregor follows through on the geeky impulses that we all have while traveling. The Coriolis effect shall remain a mystery.
