Annoy Your Friends by Celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day

September 19, 2009 at 12:35 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day, everybody, and l'shana tova, tikatevu to our Jewish readers! It's time for the nerdiest, weirdest, and most internet-driven fake holiday of the year (Pirate Day, I mean), so loosen up your vocal cords with some rum and start saying arrr!

The satirical holiday was founded in 1995 by Cap'n Slappy and Ol' Chumbucket and given a big boost in 2002 when humorist Dave Barry wrote about it in his Miami Herald column. It's been a hit with pirate hobbyists and assorted oddballs ever since, who use the occasion to get into character and throw around some colorful lingo.

If your knowledge of pirate terms begins at arrr! and ends at avast ye matey! here are a few advanced pirate words to use: beauty, bilge rat, bung hole, grog, lubber, and, for the romantically inclined, I'd love to drop anchor in your lagoon.

Of course, you don't need a holiday to talk like a pirate, but it helps to be in a pirate-friendly place. USA Today has a handy list of pirate festivals where you can embrace your inner Blackbeard, including the Pirates Week Festival on the Cayman Islands November 12 - 22, 2009 (pictured), the Beaufort Pyrate Invasion in North Carolina in August, and the Blackbeard Pirate Festival in Hampton, Virginia next July. Anchors aweigh! Whatever that means.
