Smart Washington Post Lady Shows How Around-the-World Travel is Done

September 12, 2009 at 1:38 PM | by Victor Ozols | 1 Comment

Earlier this year, a Washington Post writer named Maryann Haggerty and her husband decided to take the ultimate vacation: an around-the-world journey. The problem was, they had only 29 days to spare for a trip that most travelers set aside six months for. But they did have plenty of cash for direct flights and decent hotels, and they didn't feel compelled to wander too far off the beaten track, so they were like "Screw it, let's do it." So they did it. And from the looks of things, they did absolutely everything right. Circling the globe in a month is a daunting task, but in an interesting wrap-up of her journey in the paper this weekend, she dishes on the details that helped her and her husband visit eight countries in just over four weeks and actually enjoy the experience.

The story, and her accompanying blog, represents a handy how-to guide for aspiring circumnavigators. For one thing, Haggerty and her husband traveled only with carry-on bags, limiting their wardrobe options, but they were able to buy pretty much anything they needed along the way. (I must note, however, that my own better half wouldn't be caught dead in anything called "adventure pants," no matter how lightweight and practical, but that's just her.) She also advised, sagely, to print out every shred of travel documentation and keep it in a folder, something that came in handy in the New Delhi airport with a guard who had never heard of e-tickets. And finally, she sang the praises of travel insurance, which covered an extra day in Delhi when their flight was canceled.

I've never done an around-the-world journey before, but if I ever do, I'll refer to this guide by a couple of travelers who really seem to know what they're doing.

    Adventure Pants

I'm with your better half, Victor! Was forced to purchase zip-off nylon pants for a trip to England in high school and I spent all three weeks staring enviously at the jeans my fellow travelers had brought. Never again!

In my heart I know they're impractical, and I would consider revising my stand for a RTW trip. But for now, I always take jeans.
