Where to Stay:
The Fairmont Winnipeg is located on the corner of Portage and Main in Central Winnipeg and provides guests with the usual amenities like high speed internet, an indoor pool and fitness center. The hotel does offer a unique deal though where you can book a room on one of their lower floors directly through their website and receive a discounted price like you would through Hotwire or Travelocity. The catch is that you have to pay up front and it is nonrefundable. The discounted rates start at $168 a night , which is a bargain compared to their current best available rate of $209.
Where to Eat:
Finn's Pub, located just a few blocks from The Fairmont in the Forks, is a great place to pick up some cheap pub grub on the go or hang out, have a beer and watch a game (though we're guessing the game will be hockey, not football). The menu includes fish and chips for $11.96 and homemade apple cobbler, yum.
What to Do:
Winnipeg has made a name for itself, at least in part, through its unique music festivals. By far, the largest of the fests is the Winnipeg Folk Festival held each summer. 2009's WFF showcased more than 50 folk musicians and artists. Located in the Birds Hill Provincial Park just outside of Winnipeg, it has become a popular camping event too. Next year's acts and ticket information will be announced on the festival's website this spring.
