Today The World Remembers The Bombing Of Hiroshima

August 6, 2009 at 10:16 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Sixty-four years ago today was the date that a little Japanese city by the name of Hiroshima entered the world's consciousness forever. It was on August 6, 1945 that the plane Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb, resulting in the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare and over 140,000 deaths almost immediate deaths.

It also happens to be the 119th anniversary of the first death penalty executed by electric chair, so today isn't exactly the brightest of days.

To counteract the gravitas of the events which transpired many years ago today, many communities are holding peace marches or remembrance events, mainly for Hiroshima but really to urge for all kinds of peace. For instance, New York City has planned a paper crane-making event at the Harlem Meer in Central Park this morning, to be followed by a peace ceremony. A theatrical reading of Chiroi Miyagawa's "I Have Been To Hiroshima, Mon Amour" will take place in the East Village later today at 15 Rutherford Place at the Friends Seminary.

There are bound to be similar events all over the world, and because of the time difference, Hiroshima has already held their own, with their mayor releasing doves calling for the complete abolishment of nuclear weapons. To find your local events, a quick Google search of "64th Hiroshima event [your city]" should do the trick.
