From The Swedish Road Trip Dept.: Buy Your Volvo Here and Get a Free Vacation

Where: Sweden
August 3, 2009 at 10:53 AM | by amandak | 3 Comments

Formerly boxy, now looking cooler and always safe, the Swedish automobile miracle that is the Volvo – aka the official car of the European Union - is very keen to persuade you to visit Sweden.

The tourism attack being put on by Volvo is two-pronged – and the first involves actually buying your own Volvo. This won't suit everyone, obviously, but if you're in the market for a new Volvo and you live in the US, you can order one direct from Sweden, save around 8 percent on the price, and then get a free vacation in Sweden.

It's a pretty impressive deal – they'll give you return airfares for two, a night in a Gothenburg hotel and fifteen days car insurance and temporary registration so you can drive your very own Volvo around Sweden. After you fly home they'll ship your car back to your nearest dealer, for no extra cost.

For the rest of us who aren't quite able to cough up for a Volvo at the moment, there's still a little hope with the Visit Sweden With Volvo Contest. That involves inventing a creative itinerary for western Sweden and entering it on their website - you could win a Swedish vacation, including one week's use of a Volvo. You don't get to take that one home, though.

    Benz

You used to be able to do the same thing with Mercedes Benz in Germany. I recall my dad picking up a car for his friend in Germany once. We got a tour of the factory and drove around the country in it before they shipped it to the U.S. I puked in the backseat and my parents kind of flipped, but it wasn't my fault. There was a stinky truck on the road in front of us and the fumes made me ill. Hey, I was a little kid. Still, they made me ride the rest of the way with a shoebox in my lap.
