DJ AM, Survivor of South Carolina Plane Crash, Dies at 36

August 29, 2009 at 4:47 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

Last September, DJ AM and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker barely escaped with their lives when the Learjet in which they were traveling crashed while taking off from the Columbia, South Carolina airport. Four others in the airplane were killed. Sadly, DJ AM (real name Adam Goldstein) won't be around to mark the one-year anniversary of his miraculous survival, as the 36-year-old celebrity disk jockey was found dead in a Manhattan apartment Friday night. According to an AP story, officials suspect a drug overdose killed Goldstein, though no determination has yet been made.

Goldstein had battled drug addiction in his twenties, a disease he frequently discussed, but was thought to have been clean for nearly a decade. He even had plans to star in an upcoming reality show that staged family interventions for drug abusers. The crack pipe and prescription drugs allegedly found near his body, however, suggest he had a serious relapse. More than a few voices on the blogosphere are suggesting that survivors guilt about the plane crash may have been a factor, but that's all but impossible to prove, and beside the point. The music world lost a unique artist, and the clubs in New York and LA will be paying tribute tonight with his signature sounds.
