All The Travel That's Fit To Read: E-Book News And Obama's Reading List

August 28, 2009 at 12:29 PM | by egw | 0 Comments

Read East Coast, read West Coast, or read without books at all: Here's all the reading news intrepid travelers need to know from this week:

· Good news for flashpackers? Sony unveiled its latest e-book reader this week and before you could say "Kindle killer," reviewers rushed to express the fervent desire that it could improve on Apple's very '80s-colored category leader. The $400 touchscreen Sony "Daily Edition" will allow readers to go online with a blazing 3G network and, among other options, check out library books electronically.

The budget option for digital page-turners on Sony's line is still the $200 Reader Pocket (a 6" touchscreen with no wireless)—but can it compete with the Kindle's stranglehold over both publisher selection and the iPhone?

· L.A. reads, too! The home of the movies has a bit of a complex about being well, read—come on, someone has to be writing all those scripts! But literate Angelenos can now point to the Los Angeles Library Foundation's star-studded ALOUD reading series, featuring leading lights like Nobel Prize Winner Orhan Pamuk. Travel lovers will want to check out October 2nd's "Cities, Bicycles and the Future of Getting Around" (featuring singer David Byrne) and October 29th's restaurant critic face-off.

· Hail to the (reading) chief: President Obama's on vacation this week in Martha's Vineyard and book lovers everywhere have been jumping to critique his reading list. His titles take place everywhere from New York City's Lower East Side (Richard Price's LUSH LIFE) to small-town Colorado, so no one can accuse him of mentally staying in the Beltway. But at 2,300 pages, Obama's got one heck of a heavy carry-on—someone give the man an e-book reader!
