As part of the Yucatan Explorer tour, participants will volunteer with a variety of charities in Cancun. These agencies include The Bed and Blanket Shelter, a Women's Shelter, the Home for Children, the Home for the Elderly, and a local Hospice. Volunteers spend a few days in the agencies doing basic tasks, like serving meals, helping the elderly to be more active, helping out with maintenance, or teaching children English. There are no special skills needed as anyone can join the tour; it is even recommended for families who want to volunteer together.
The trip also includes a day of leisure in nearby Puerto Morelos, a tour of the Mayan Chichen Itza, a stop at the biosphere reserve in Calakmul to see howler monkeys, biking and kayaking in Siankaan, a trip to the famed Loltun Caverns and much more before spending the final two days relaxing at Caracol Village in Playa del Carmen.
The next Yuctan Explorer trip to Canun leaves December 24, 2009 and costs $4350 per person. If you have a small group of people who want to travel together, Hands Up Holidays also offers custom-made trips to suit your group's needs anytime of year. It might sound expensive, but at least you aren't just sitting around and consuming umbrellaed-up drinks.
