Frommer Announces Arizona Travel Boycott; Do You Agree?

August 28, 2009 at 9:29 AM | by Jennifer Kester | 4 Comments

Travel guru Art Frommer proclaimed on his blog recently that he's putting a moratorium on vacationing in Arizona because of its lax gun laws. To clarify his position, Frommer said he was alarmed that the state's gun statutes allowed about a dozen armed people, including one toting an assault rifle, to sit outside a place where President Obama was speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He said:

I will not personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons onto the sidewalks and as a means of political protest. I not only believe such practices are a threat to the future of our democracy, but I am firmly convinced that they would also endanger my own personal safety there. And therefore I will cancel any plans to vacation or otherwise visit in Arizona until I learn more.

Just reading this actually freaks us out similarly, and it speaks to Frommer's resolve that he can so strongly declare a boycott of a state that boasts the Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu's London Bridge, and the red rocks of Sedona. But put all of the tourist sites aside and simply consider your safety.

Are there any destinations you refuse to visit? Is your decision based upon moral or political reasons, or were you swayed by factors like safety? Please tell us about your personal travel boycotts or concerns in the comments! Help a fellow traveler out.

    Arizona <3s Knives

Had a fine time on a recent trip to Arizona, but we did notice some sketch-o dude with a huge knife--like at least a foot long--just chilling in his belt while he cruised down the street.

No joke, it was probably a small machete.

I'm Arizona-ed out for now, but would return in the future despite their love of weapons. I'll just ensure I'm extra friendly.

    Give me a break

Arizona is probably the safest place because of that. With gun control laws, only the criminals have guns.

    The taint of Europe

I refuse to visit Hendaia, France ever again. I have no moral or political reason, but a civil one. Every encounter I had with someone working in this town was impolite, rude, and worst of all, a scam. The man working at the train station tried to charge us almost triple what it should have cost for a train to Paris. Luckily, we had our wits about us and waited for another employee to take over his shift. Furthermore, there is absolutely nothing to do there. See for yourself if you'd like, but you were warned.

    Just AZ?

He might as well boycott the rest of the states that have the similar laws. He obviously doesn't know anything about the gun laws in the US.
