· Urth Caffe
Admittedly, many of the best spots to grab coffee in LA aren't exactly unheard-of. Here, everything including caffeine habits can be turned into a trend. Witness the scene at Urth Cafe on Melrose, where you're almost guaranteed a celebrity sighting, or could run into the cast of Entourage filming an episode. The lines are long but fast-moving, but there's a chance your order may get lost during peak hours.
· Intelligentsia CoffeeBar
Further west is the newest Intelligentsia, Venice's counterpart to the Silverlake outpost. Already it is capitalizing on both its prime real estate on bustling Abbot Kinney Boulevard and its very serious reputation. Here, drinking coffee is a ritual meant to be savored—a vaguely European attitude that suits the oceanside city well.
Ordering can be a little confusing; there are multiple stations (part of a mega "concierge desk"), and we were distracted by the gleaming brass and steam-emitting espresso makers in the space. Your best bet is to go for one of the bright and lively coffees-of-the-day, or to ask your barista for their expert opinion, which they're happy to offer.
· LA Mill
Back on the Eastside is LA Mill, a modern, bright red storefront with chandelier adornments and waitresses sporting identical high-waisted jeans once you get inside. This place is fashion-forward in every way, but the pretty decor and equally attractive employees aren't a cover for sub-par product; they only enhance what we dare to call the city's best coffee.
Don't be overwhelmed by the elaborate menu. You could close your eyes, point, and end up with something guaranteed good. We went with the House blend on our last visit, while our companions ordered a French Press selection and iced coffee, respectively, along with a plate of donut holes that we almost ended up fighting over. This is where many of Silverlake's très cool coffee connoisseurs go for their daily fix, maybe before or after a walk around the nearby reservoir.
The common denominator binding these shops together? There's no way you can leave without feeling mildly buzzed, and when the coffee is that good, you know something's been done right.
