Continental and US Airways Hike Checked Bag Fee To $50

August 27, 2009 at 10:26 AM | by JetSetCD | 2 Comments

Do you know that song from Cabaret that goes: "Money makes the world go around, the world go around?" Well, these days the lyrics should be amended to "money makes the airlines fly round the world, round the world." You see, yet another baggage fee hike went into affect yesterday, and it'll no doubt cause even more headaches at check-in.

Now raising second checked bag fees on international flights up to $50 each way, Continental Airlines and US Airways join Delta and American Airlines in such skyway robbery. For US Airways, the new charges apply to tickets purchased beginning yesterday for travel on Oct. 7 or later, while Continental's fee applies to flights between US and Europe and akes effect for tickets purchased today for travel on or after Sept. 15.

Not surprisingly, US Airways president Scott Kirby told employees in a letter that baggage fee revenue this year will be around a hefty $400 million. We're sure it won't be long before we're being charged $400 million to just a first checked bag on a plane. How's a girl supposed to go shopping in Italy on a tight budget if checking the second bag costs just as much as a fine leather journal from Tuscany?

    The fees are crazy, but...

Do people want rock bottom airfares or realistically priced airfares that are all inclusive? Say airline A has a ticket for $200 from NYC-LAX, but has additional fees for food, bags, etc... and airline B is $300, but has food, no bag fees, entertainment, the average consumer is going to buy the cheap one and then complain. Unfortunately the airlines go with the lowest common denominator and that's what we have to deal with. I personally would rather pay a bit more and have a seamless travel experience, but I essentially already have that with my frequent flyer status.
