Virgin America Has The Best Muffaletta Sandwich In The Sky

August 17, 2009 at 4:19 PM | by | Comments (4)

Peanuts, pretzels, and the occasional very sad-looking fruit plate. These are some of the usual offerings onboard domestic flights in the US, but as anyone who has flown Virgin America knows, there is some serious hope out there.

In their September issue, Travel + Leisure revealed the results of their annual World's Best awards judged by readers, and Virgin America came out as tops for in-flight food service. Specifically, the award is "World's Best Domestic Airline for Food." This follows their winning Best Domestic Airline in both 2008 and 2009; take that, legacy carriers!

Of course with food this good on an LCC, you've got to pay for it if you're flying economy (Main cabin select and first class get free food). Options like hummus and pita chips, the black and bleu steak sandwich, and a thai vegetable salad run between $7-$10 and you order them from the RED system's touchscreen. Our mouth is already watering for the Muffaletta sandwich:

Hearty Focaccia bread stuffed with shaved honey ham, Genoa salami, shaved turkey, Swiss and provolone cheese, spicy olive salad, green leaf lettuce, and sliced tomatoes, paired with Italian dressing on the side, and a Toblerone chocolate for dessert.

Have you ordered any of this top-ranked food from VA's RED system? What was it and was it tasty? Any recommendations? Let us know in the comments!

Wow!

I cannot wait for my trip to Vegas on Virgin America! I have to have that Muffaletta sandwich! YUMMY!

VA Food

I really dig the foods I've tried from VA thus far. I had the Turkey Florentine Handroll very tasty! I love getting the Veggies & Hummus, Fruit & Cheese. Always a nice variety to choose from unlike every other airline I've ever flown.

Southwestern Chicken Hand Roll is Tasty+++

I don't usually like wrap-type things because they have too much lettuce. But this was one of the more delicious sandwichy-tortilla things I've had in a long time. Fresh tasting chicken, peppers, some delicious salsa, and just enough lettuce for crunch, and wrapped more like hand roll sushi than burrito style wrap. My coworker had the Asian Salad. Also Delicious! Definately better than any of the airport food at virgin terminal in SFO OR JFK

I love VA but....

I have to say I am really disappointed with the 1st class "snacks" now being offered for the shorter flights. The usual "Tapas Trio" that were offered in the past are now a thing of the past it seems. What now is being offered are:

Pretzels
Trail Mix
Small Chocolate Bars
And the likes (not fair!).....all of which to me (and about 80% of the 1st class flyers I was on board with) turned these all down.

There were NO food options offered (really...not even cookies!) on my flight(s) from SFO to LAX which to be honest was VERY upsetting seeing how I really did enjoy having my scotch on the rocks followed by a lovely trio of tapas.

Maybe for longer flights the food is worth raving about however I don't think because your flight is just an hour long that you should suffer with high-carb, standard junk. What happened to the VA offerings I so loved and suggested to so many friends they try?
