An iPhone App For the Frequently Lost: Acrossair

July 8, 2009 at 9:23 AM | by | Comments (0)

How great would life be if you had a kind of built-in GPS, which when you were lost, would activate and show you visual directions on how to reach the nearest subway stop? Well, life must be pretty great then since a British company is one of the first to do just this using the new features of an iPhone 3GS.

Mainly utilizing the compass and video camera of the 3GS, the acrossair application works by displaying the distance and direction of London tube stops, shown as little info bubbles laid atop the live camera on your phone. It's augmented reality, and boy is it awesome.

Although the app is still on the verge of approval—it's awaiting Apple's release of a live-video API to developers—it shows that more apps like this are possible. Of course New York City could use one, but how about displaying the nearest public bathroom or coffee shop? Starbucks would have a field day with this technology.

To whet your appetite for the release, check out the video of the app in action over PSFK. Again, it's only for the iPhone 3GS, sorry 3G users; you used to be cool.
