You never have to look far for a cup of coffee in NYC, but that doesn’t mean New Yorkers can’t make an obsession out of the search for the perfect cup—and we don’t mean the ubiquitous “best cup of coffee in the world” that Will Ferrell got so excited about in Elf.

Lately, NYC java is more about the super-serious independent coffee shops that have popped up throughout Brooklyn and lower Manhattan, attracting devoted followings by treating a cup of coffee as something akin to an art form. Beans are carefully sourced and locally roasted, baristas are trained on top-notch equipment with all the seriousness of a culinary institute, and customers not only know what country their favorite brew is from, but its town of origin and even the farm.

The NYC coffee shop with perhaps the most devout following is Café Grumpy, which is set on a quiet residential street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a good half-mile hike from the G train, but that doesn’t seem to stop it from drawing a crowd every single morning. Grumpy's baristas go through weeks of training before taking a spot behind the bar, and their intensity is reflected in the time they put into making sure each macchiato and espresso is the exact right flavor, strength, and temperature. As a result, regulars here know to never complain about waiting 5 minutes for a drink.

The shop has since expanded with a Chelsea location, which is where Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz wandered into awhile back and spied the now notorious $11,000 Clover machines. He subsequently bought the company that makes the machines, so you won’t be seeing any new coffee shops popping up with Clovers. Fortunately, Grumpy’s still got ‘em, and at least in NYC, they’re giving the ‘bux a run for their money, with a third location that just opened in Park Slope.
