The NYC coffee shop with perhaps the most devout following is Café Grumpy, which is set on a quiet residential street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a good half-mile hike from the G train, but that doesn’t seem to stop it from drawing a crowd every single morning. Grumpy's baristas go through weeks of training before taking a spot behind the bar, and their intensity is reflected in the time they put into making sure each macchiato and espresso is the exact right flavor, strength, and temperature. As a result, regulars here know to never complain about waiting 5 minutes for a drink.
The shop has since expanded with a Chelsea location, which is where Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz wandered into awhile back and spied the now notorious $11,000 Clover machines. He subsequently bought the company that makes the machines, so you won’t be seeing any new coffee shops popping up with Clovers. Fortunately, Grumpy’s still got ‘em, and at least in NYC, they’re giving the ‘bux a run for their money, with a third location that just opened in Park Slope.
