Become The Official Blogger For A Polar Cruise

July 7, 2009 at 5:07 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Potential alternative titles: "Become Antarctica's Ben Southall," "A colder chance to be Ben Southall," or - more simply - "We hate Ben Southall." Southall, you'll recall, was the winner of Tourism Queensland's Best Job In The World Contest. Contestants had to submit videos explaining why they should be allowed to house-sit the Great Barrier Reef and blog about it for six months. People voted on their favorite applications, the tourism board chose one, and that was that.

Having won, Southall has recently taken to posting pictures of himself cavorting with dolphins and hanging out in his luxury villa. See? Hate.

In addition to unending enmity, the competition also generated about $200 million in global publicity value for Tourism Queensland. So naturally similar promotions are springing up. The most recent is Quark Expeditions' Blog Your Way To Antarctica contest.

The organization is looking for an Official Blogger to join them on a $20,000 Arctic cruise. Responsibilities include blogging and chronicling about the emotion and drama of polar adventure, in exchange for which you get to tag along for free. Hey, we could do that! Um. Wait. Yeah, we already did that.

Contestants are asked to create a 300 word blog post explaining why they should be chosen as the cruise's official blogger. People then get to vote on the videos and the contestant with the most votes on September 30th gets to go. If you win they'll fly you into Argentina, take care of your hotel along the way, and pay for everything once the cruise gets going. You get to bring a friend.

The cruise, on the company's Lyubov Orlova, begins on February 20 and goes till March 3. It's not exactly a tropical paradise but there are definitely perks that aren't available in Queensland. For instance: penguins.
