Pet Airways Will Be The Only New Airline Launching This Month

July 7, 2009 at 8:39 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

The most exciting new airline of the year is Pet Airways, and unlike Jet America, they appear ready to fly starting next week. Suburban Air Freight operates their service, so we’re unsure if the pet planes will be covered in a unique pet-inspired livery, but they're worth looking out for anyway. The planes look like they’ll be Beech or Cessna aircraft, so the propeller noise may disturb Fido and Whiskers’ slumber during their trip.

According to their website, the first flights will start up next week on July 14, with service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We tried booking a trip for our fictional office dog, and had no problem getting our puppy a seat aboard the airplane from New York to Los Angeles. We were even encouraged to upgrade his carrier size for an extra $50 or $100, and to purchase some insurance. Upselling—they even sound like a real airline.

However, we discovered that we’d have to drop our best friend off at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York—that’s on Long Island. Upon arrival on the west coast, we’d have to pick him up at the Los Angeles Executive Airport in Hawthorne. This is a little better than the Long Island location, as it’s more convenient than LAX.

If you don’t have a pet that needs a vacation, you can still get involved with the airline as they are hiring. Update your resume to include your love for all things furry as you compete to score a position as Pet Lounge Manager. You’ll be managing the ground crew while you ensure that all goes well with the pawsengers. If you lack the experience to manage, you'll be scooping poop or distributing Meow Mix in the air, as there are also openings for In-Flight Pet Attendants. Hey—it's a job, and we're still in a recession last we checked.
