We actually stopped by in January of 2007 and shot the above video of a American Airlines jet coming in over the water for the heart-stopping landing. Nonetheless, the real show times occur when the 747s from Paris and Amsterdam appear first as blips on the horizon and slowly approach you dead-on. We'll just say that their landings do more than rearrange your hairdo.
Although it might seem like some easy. harmless fun to watch planes land at SXM, watching them take off is another matter entirely. This is when it can become deadly; the jets sit at the end of the runway near the beach and fire up their engines, causing those on the beach to tumble somersault-style back into the surf. Don't believe us? There's an infamous video of it happening. Duck and roll doesn't just apply to catching on fire anymore; it's how to avoid being sand-burned from jet blasts.
Got another impressive location for plane spotting we should know about? This is going to be a running series, so email us your suggestions!
