Watch For Fly Balls And Landing Planes At NY's Citi Field
We love airplanes, you love airplanes, so let's go look at airplanes! In our Prime Plane Spotting series, we'll let you in on all the best spots to whip out your cameras and binoculars for a piece of the aviation action.
Finally, there is a huge benefit to being cheap and buying only the highest, nosebleedingest seats at a Mets game at Citi Field: it means you're that much closer to the airplanes landing at neighboring LaGuardia. We had the opportunity to take in both a Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon game at the new stadium recently, and we spent just as much time watching the action in the skies as the action on the field.
Even for those who aren't baseball fans, it's a great way to get out on a sunny day, enjoy a hot dog, and point your binoculars to the clouds for some excellent plane spotting. Even without binoculars it's great, but they help in identifying planes with minimal livery.
For instance. during the Saturday evening game, the planes were taking off and heading straight over the stadium and everything from the landing gear tucking away to the airline logo was visible. But on Sunday, as you can see in the picture above, the planes were landing a little off to the side of the stadium, and differentiating between US Airways and a Delta required sharp eyesight.
If you'd like to see for yourself how close the stadium sits to LaGuardia, here is a great overview photo. To get your own seat underneath the aviation action, plan for this summer as their regular season ends on October 4. That is, unless they make it to post-season, and in that case we'll expect to see some pigs flying into LGA too.
