A spokesperson for the airline indicated that the free WiFi promotion was to celebrate their successful installation of the service across the fleet. However, he also noted that they were doing it to stick out in the competitive business traveler market. Once the promo is over, prices will go back to their $5.95 and $12.95 for short and long haul routes, respectively.
Meanwhile, Southwest still only has WiFi on just a few planes and the routes vary from day to day. So if you're a business traveler or politico out of Boston who needs internet access in-flight, then you'll probably want to stick with AirTran anyways.
