When A Two-Minute Phone Call at The Airport Costs $50

Where: Paris, France

When we got our June credit card statement the other day, we discovered a mysterious charge for about $52. Upon further investigation with the help of the credit card company, we learned that the charge was for a phone call we’d made from a pay phone at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris…in April. Thanks to some wonky phone battery issues, we’d had to use one of those phones that accepts credit cards in order to leave a friend a voicemail that we’d arrived. The call lasted under two minutes, and cost more than a good meal out.

We called the company that runs the pay phone service. Turns out it’s called Network Operator Services, Inc., and is a “Foreign Corporation” registered in North Dakota, though its call center is in Longview, Texas. We decided we were going to investigate the strange charge, 60 Minutes style. That’s right, Andy Rooney, we said it. When we called Network Operator Services, their customer service agent tried to explain the charge by saying that they have a 3-minute minimum call length, and that’s what we were being charged for. But that works out to nearly $17 per minute, and it still didn’t seem right.

We then asked our credit card company whether we could dispute the charge since the rates were not listed on the phone, nor disclosed at any point during the process of placing the call, but they told us that since we had effectively authorized the call by providing our credit card number, there was no way to dispute it through them.

So now we’re out $50…for the moment. We’re going to contact the Federal Communications Commission, as well as the Better Business Bureaus in both North Dakota and Texas to see if we can get some answers there. We’re disappointed that the credit card company wasn’t willing to go to bat for us, so thanks for nothing, Bank of America. But look out, NOS, we’ve got a lot of time on our hands, and we’re willing to use it to shed some light on your shady practices!

What can you learn from our bad luck? If you ever get stuck in a bind at a foreign airport like we did and need to use the phone, run into one of the convenience stores or newsstands and buy a small-denomination prepaid phone card, and use that to make your call. Even international calls will cost just a fraction of what we’ve been fleeced.

Similar thing happened to me

But it was in St Louis, USA, where I called a cell phone to a friend in USA under a minute, saying arrived, but was charged $21+.

4 Calls

I just found out that I was charged that $52 per phone call for 4 phone calls! One call didn't even connect and they are still charging me this much! I would have never used their ridiculous pay phones if I would have known that. We already had to shell out over $600 because Paris De Gaulle airport loads their planes an hour early and we missed our flight. Now they are going to charge me over $200 for 4 phone calls that were less than 2 minutes each!?!?! What the hell?

any luck yet?

same just happened to me on july 16th. exactly $52. i have entered a dispute with the credit card company, as i didn't recognize what NOS*CL was. i thought maybe i could still dispute, based on it being absolutely ridiculous, but sounds like it didn't work for you. any ideas??

At least I am not alone

Same thing happened to me in Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris where I had to make a 2 minutes long distance call.End up paying 65 canadian dollar. My credit card company said cannot dispute the charges since i have used the service of the phone company

Ouch, time to go virtual

I work for a virtual phone card service at www.pingo.com. This is a perfect example of why you should have an "emergency calling card" while you travel to avoid these hidden fee's.

not just at Charles DeGaulle International Airport

This isn't just in Europe. I made a call to my mother from a pay phone, two counties away in California, using a credit card, to tell her I was enroute, and the call cost $29.57. The company that billed me was Legacy. This is totally outrageous. Rates are never posted or disclosed in any fashion. What can the consumer do to fight this outrage?

I thought I was the only one !!!!

The same thing happened with me and one of my colleague. We were also charged $52 each for a minute's call. Also in New Jersey we had to shell out 48 $ for a 2 minute call from a hotel phone. The phone company told us that this is the charge applied to overseas calls. This was outrageous as I can call India for a small fraction of this using a call card

Update?

Yeah, this happened to me too. The thing that makes me furious is that they did not state their call rates anywhere on their machine. I was waiting to board at the gate and my mobile phone just ran out of credit, so I had no choice but to use the only payphone in the area. I was charged 35 euros for each 2 min call, totalling eu70 - the first one didn't even connect! What's the latest with your search? Have you made any progress?
