The Most Shocking McDonald's Locations in The World

July 15, 2009 at 2:37 PM | by juliana | 31 Comments

You often hear people say that when Armageddon comes, the only survivors left will be cockroaches and Cher. Well, you might want to add McDonald's to the survivors list too.

There are over 31,000 McDonald's locations world-wide and the catchphrase, "I'm loving it" has been translated to at least 16 different languages. And even though the menus may vary from country to country, the Golden Arches remain.

Of course, we expect to find McDonald's in bustling city centers, airports, and suburban spots frequented by moms in minivans, but nothing can quite prepare us for the shock we feel when stepping out of an ancient palace, museum, or monument and the Golden Arches are beckoning us to come inside and order a Big Mac (or if you're in Norway, a McLak salmon sandwich.)

Below are five shocking McDonald's locations that we've found. We know that there are more out there, so go on and send us your most shocking McDonald's location moment. Don't be shy -- send us photos, stories, you know the drill and we will get the golden arches up on our Most Shocking McDonald's in the World Map.

The Most Shocking McDonald's Locations In the World

Windsor Castle

What's a visit to London without a day trip to the Windsor Castle where the Queen spends her weekends? While getting into the castle a few hundred years ago was impossible, today anyone can tour the thousand-year-old fortress everyday from 9:45am to 5:15pm. But if learning about the royal life leaves you feeling a bit oppressed, let your hair down across the street. Exactly opposite of the castle is a McDonald's (and a Starbucks and some other fast food joints.) To see how close the castle is to McDonald's check out this Flickr snapshot.

Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai

The Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai was originally created in 1577 for the parents of a Ming dynasty officer. Throughout the centuries the garden has been destroyed and rebuilt with the final restoration project completed in 1961 when it opened to the public. After you're done sightseeing through the garden's six main scenic areas--Sansui Hall, Wanhua Chamber, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, Yuhua Hall and the Inner Garden--and the ancient teahouse, you can fill up your belly with some Mickey D's across the street.

Museum of Communism, Prague

The highly specific Museum of Communism focuses on the "totalitarian regime from the February coup in 1948 to its rapid collapse in November 1989." Visitors are treated to "immersive factories" such as a historical schoolroom, an interrogation room and the Television Time Machine where they can watch video clips about communism. All of that will have you pleading for comfort food from the free world and you're in luck. There's a McDonald's right below the museum. Once you're done eating, try your hand at the casino next door.

Piazza Matteotti, Siena

Siena is a quaint medieval city in Tuscany, Italy and it's quite small compared with the other big must-stop cities on the Italian Renaissance tour. In fact, it's more like a town than a city but Siena's famous Piazza del Campo--where The Palio (horse races) are held each summer--is actually a UNESCO Heritage site. And just up from this is the Piazza Giacomo Matteotti where you can find a McDonald's that serves you birra and Nuovo McFlurries.

Fañabe Beach Resort, Tenerife

[Perry Tak]

We expect to find McDonalds in urban and suburban areas of the world, but a beachfront McDonald's restaurant? You have to go to Tenerife, the largest island in the Spanish Canary Islands, to experience this. According to Flickr member, Perry Tak, in South Tenerife there's a McDonalds restaurante at the the beach of Fañabe and Torviscas. And yes, there's outdoor seating.

Got another shocking McDonald's location we should know about? This is going to be a running series, so email us your suggestions!

    Wetherspoons

I've added the location of a Wetherspoons (cheap chain pub which are omnipresent) to the photograph. It's a nice Wetherspoons, but a budget rate, chavvy old man's pub all the same.

Not exactly McDs, but there use to be a Starbucks IN the Forbidden City, Beijing. It is gone now, but it was awesomely ironic.

    Don't miss Minsk

I was somewhat shocked to see a McDonalds on the main drag in Minsk, Belarus! Belarus is a time warp - they still honor Lenin and Marx with street names and statues aplenty. Funny to the the king of American capitalism in a country generally opposed to all things capitalist and/or Western...

I can't eat the food, but man does it give me a nice warm capitalistic feeling whenever I see the golden arches abroad.

    Best I've ever had

Most people don't come to Panama to eat at a McDonald's. But the one in David, Panama was the best I've ever had in my life.

    luggage woes

Any hotel worth staying at will be more than willing to take your luggage off your hands for the day & often, if there is a vacant room, or someone has departed early, they're willing to let you check in early too (but don't count on that, if you want to have access to a room immediately after getting off a red eye, just book the night before your arrival & let the hotel know that you'll be getting in a 5am!). The added bonus of leaving your luggage at the frontdesk, prior to check in, is that they'll often take the time to move your bags to your room, which means you won't have to lug them yourself. :)

    McDonald's in Mathura, India

On my first trip to India in 2002, I was driven down National Highway 2 toward Agra. The road had not only cars, trucks, buses, mopeds, and tuk-tuks, but also extensive human and animal cross traffic, making the entire trip an adventure.

In the middle of nowhere (Mathura) stood this bright and shiny McDonald's. This was well before the recent proliferation of McDonald's around the country. Even though it was only 9:30 in the morning, we stopped to try their fries and marveled at how they were able to replicate the unique McFries taste in such a remote location.

Of course, the entire menu was "veg", so no one was having any Quarter Pounders. An option was a "veg" BigMac, but I passed on it. The clean, Western-style restrooms were a big plus.

For me, the funniest thing was the sign advertising birthday parties at McDonalds: "Cowboys and American Indians".

    museum of communism

I visited the museum of communism (worth a peek if you're in prague) back in early 2006 and they were advertising the museum all over the city with the tag 'We're above McDonald's, across from Benetton, Viva La Imperialism!'

    Resonable?

The pricing isn't designed to be reasonable, it's designed to be punitive. I would guess that UA got tired of being abused in these new aviation days of high fuel prices and ala carte pricing. With this kind of charge, I would guess most blockheads would now "get it" and stop abusing the service for the rest of us.

I was pleasantly surprised to see mention of the David Panama McD's. I don't eat there in the USA, but on a trip trough Central America, I stopped at this very same McD! It was a great moment to feel "like home," even if it hurt me later :)

Would you believe there's a McDonald's in the Royal Children's hospital in Melbourne Australia...there's nothing like a good salt and sugar laden greasy burger to make a very sick child feel better???

ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL MPLS MN USA

This hospital is well known for open heart surgery. It is well known that fast food is far from the best type of food to eat and they have a McDonalds inside the hospital. Must be trying to drum up business. Clog those arteries!

    Salzburg, Austria - Mozart's Birthplace

There's a McD's down the street from Mozart's birthplace, in the Old Town district in Salzburg Austria. Let's just say it took the shine off the visit. See the pic at: http://thumb0.webshots.net/t/57/57/7/52/22/2332752220087657300xFPRrq_th.jpg

Take a peek at `McLibel' by John Vidal. An interesting account of the longest trial in British history. After a flyer entitled ``What's Wrong with McDonald's'' was passed around London, the corporation took offense and sued Helen Steel and Dave Morris, members of London Greenpeace (a group not affiliated with the international organization Greenpeace), for libel.

    In Rome, facing the Pantheon

McDonald's addresses the Pantheon, one of the most important sites in Rome, if not the world. It's right across from it. From the portico of the Pantheon, McDonald's glows bright at night.
