Great Bongs of the World: Big Ben Turns 150

July 11, 2009 at 4:06 PM | by Victor Ozols | 1 Comment

The London bell known as Big Ben turns 150 years old this year, giving writers around the world license to use the word bong in dozens of news stories. After all, bong describes the sound this famous bell makes throughout the day, striking the musical note E every hour. Four other bells strike G sharp, F sharp, E, and B on the quarter hours, broadcasting the song Westminster Quarters throughout the Parliament grounds and beyond. How about those bongs?

According to an AP story, Big Ben's first official bong was heard on July 11, 1859, exactly 150 years ago today. The milestone will be marked with a special projection wishing the bell a happy birthday broadcast on the south side of the 315-foot (96-meter) tower starting at 10:00 p.m. The story also includes a sentence that made me snicker like Beavis: "Big Ben's bongs are a cherished feature of life in London." Heh heh. Gotta meet this Ben guy.

On a serious note, the name Big Ben officially applies only to the main bell, but more generally it also describes the tower and clock, which have both been spruced up nicely for anniversary events throughout the year. During the weekend of September 19, for example, a rare Open House event will feature a special Big Ben exhibition, with a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the iconic landmark. The bong jokes are sure to write themselves.
