This Weekend In the World: Bejeweled Toilet Seats and Canals of Art

· Venice: This weekend marks the opening of Venice's huge art to-do, the Biennale, which transforms the city into an exhibition space for international artists until November. While the acqua alta floods the city during late winter and early spring, the Biennale does its own summer flooding of Venice with tourists and fans of modern art, film, music and dance. Expect to see odd apparitions like inflatable icebergs plopped in squares, such as in the picture above. For information on the exhibition's major shows and locations, check out the official website.

· Lexington, KY: What better reason to head to Kentucky than to gawk at gilded Monopoly boards, cell phones, and yes even toilet seats? Lexington's Headley-Whitney Museum has a show of San Francisco-based jewelry designer Sidney Mobell's impressive collection of gold and gem-encrusted things, called "Jeweled Objects of Desire." We're a bit put off by the waste involved in creating a diamond mouse trap, but whatever floats his boat. To be dazzled, check out their website.

· Montreal: North of the border in Montreal, pay $1 (Canadian dollars, even) for a tasting ticket at Canada's largest beer festival, the Festival Mondial de la Bière, and enjoy brews from all around the world—the list is a delicious read in itself. The festival runs all through the weekend, so plan on guzzling from tonight through Sunday. Full information is located here.
