D-Day's 65th Anniversary Invades Normandy With Tourists

It's Thursday, which probably means that you are asking yourself what's going on this weekend. If it were 65 years ago, the answer wouldn't be anything nearly as nice as seeing a movie or sleeping in—it'd be invading the beaches of Normandy.

This Saturday marks the 65th anniversary of that tragic but triumphant day when Allied forces stormed five beach areas of Northern France in order to begin wrestling control of the country away from the Nazis in World War II. Since Normandy sees so much tourism of the historical sites on normal days, we're going to bet that this weekend will be the craziest yet.

Adding to the frenzy of this anniversary are the visits of President Obama, French President Sarkozy, and Britain's Prince Charles. To best maneuver around whatever will be closed off for the official and high-security festivities, we recommend hopping an in-depth bus tour like that of Battlebus.

Specializing in only World War II-related tours, the company offers specialty guided historical tours of areas like the American, British and Canadian zones, the Band of Brothers sites, and places personal to your family. Tours average 85 Euro per person, but while they aren't cheap, they are chock-full of facts and access out of reach for the typical Normandy tourist.
