If You Could Only See One Broadway Musical Right Now, What Would It Be?

June 5, 2009 at 10:32 AM | by juliana | 4 Comments

It's summer in New York and tourists are descending in droves, including us. Kind of. While we're here on a three-week tour to visit family in the Jerz, we've been spending quite a lot of time in the city. One thing we've yet to do however is see a Broadway musical.

As a kid, our school classes took regular field trips to NYC to take in Broadway shows and plays. (There are some advantages to growing up Bridge and Tunnel.) Later on in life, we worked in Times Square (not that kind of work) and we could see a show whenever we and our wallets felt like it. But now that we've moved away, seeing shows is not as easy as it once was. We're here for one more week and we can't decide which show to see. So we thought we'd ask you guys.

Here are the options:

· 9 to 5: We hung around the Marriott Marquis before an event the other night and thanks to the video screen playing clips of the musical, coupled with our 100+ screenings of 9 to 5 the original movie, we feel as if we've already seen this. But maybe Dolly Parton's new songs are worth it?
· South Pacific: One of our favorite musicals as a kid. "I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair and send him on his way!" We still have the battered VHS copy in our old bedroom. But will the new show disappoint?
· Billy Elliott: Again, we've seen the movie but are leaning towards seeing these little boys dance their heart out in person.
· In the Heights: The first we heard of this musical was when Britney Spears took in this show and dined with the cast members in her MTV Diary of a Lonely Pop Star special. The story is about the Dominican-American community in Washington Heights and features hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music. Also, it won a Tony award for Best Musical.
· West Side Story: Another classic that's been revived on the Great White Way. Plus, we've heard rave reviews of the new interpretation.
· Kiddie-Related: We can't forget The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins or Shrek, although we'd really rather not!

Help us decide which one by writing in your pick in comments below.

    Broadway

Of the ones listed as options, I'd go with Billy Elliott. I haven't seen it yet, but do have tix for July 3rd, and love the movie (cry every time I see it). I would also suggest Wicked or Avenue Q

    ROCK OF AGES!

C'mon! Set in the 80's LA club scene! No brainer! Plus, it has Constantine Maroulis.
