Continental Celebrates 75th Anniversary By Buying Their Own Present

Continental Airlines is getting ready to celebrate their 75th anniversary on July 15, and they’ve ordered themselves a pretty nice birthday present: a brand spanking new Boeing 737-900ER. This fresh jet will have a retro paint job known as “The Blue Skyway,” a livery originally slapped onto the side of the company’s planes in 1947 and chosen to be on the newest plane by the company's employees.

To show off their new bird, they flew her to each of their hubs. The plane was in Cleveland, Newark, and Houston late last week. Since we’re big dorks when it comes to stuff like this, we're excited to see the snazzy new paint job, but bummed that we missed checking it out in person. Who doesn't enjoy watching a new plane get a shower from the airport fire department?

Although the exterior of the plane is all shiny, we immediately began to wonder if this new plane's interior is equipped with the airline’s new DirecTV service. Unfortunately, we can’t confirm if the plane will meet your A/V dreams and desires, but this type of plane is the first to get the service—so if it doesn’t have it yet, it’ll have it by September. Just keep checking here for updates.

For now, how about Continental shooting us over some $75 fares so that passengers can properly celebrate their birthday as well?
