The Hawk Has Landed: Southwest Claims Its LaGuardia Gate

Where: LaGuardia Airport [map], Queens, NY, United States

Please commence with your offerings to the LCC gods as finally, finally Southwest Airlines has claimed a stake in the crowded New York City airspace. Both arriving and leaving New York-LaGuardia for the first time this last Sunday, SWA made a literal splash as the airport's firetrucks welcomed the inaugural flight with traditional arcs of water.

Meanwhile in the terminal, Southwest doled out breakfast to hungry passengers, entertained with a lounge singer, and indulged in everybody's favorite form of service with a smile: gift bags.

Our favorite part has to be their new motto for the routes to Chicago-Midway and Baltimore-BWI: "We have one gate and we're not afraid to use it." Nonetheless, they've also got that popular party porch in Bryant Park until late September, so won't everyone know about the new kid in town.

Flights out out of LaGuardia this summer to Chicago begin at $109 each way and BWI sits squarely around $69 each way. Now consider that SWA still doesn't charge any fees to check baggage (even two!), and we're thinking a quick weekend away looks pretty good to stave off summer cabin fever.
