The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a famous walking trail in the Eastern United States that runs 3,500 kilometers from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin, Maine. Every season, a handful of "thru-hikers" walk the entire distance, but usually people just hike parts of the trail that are close to their homes. I'm personally only familiar with the portion that runs through New York's Harriman State Park, which is a relatively easy hike with plenty of scenic vistas and picnic spots, but I imagine that it's lovely no matter where you pick it up.
So regardless of why the AT is in the news these days, use the reminder as motivation to pull on those hiking boots and hit a trail near you. It's cheap, it's fun, it's healthy, and chances are, your hike won't cause an international incident. Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and trail mix and you'll be fine. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are also nice.
