If you're traveling to wine country you might as well plan your visit around unique wine events. On August 8th Paso Robles will be hosting their Annual Winemaker Cook-off. The event involves 30 wineries who compete to serve the best grilled gourmet food and match it with the best local wines. Tickets clock in at $75/person and - get this - rarely have problems selling out.
The cook-off also has hotel packages that are worth investigating, if only because they get you into California's verdant hills at an affordable price. The event will even have a band, though frankly we burned up all our fake enthusiasm for country fair bands during a previous BBQ post and now we can't be bothered.
Other Paso Robles events worth considering: their July 4th celebration, which they claim is the largest on the Central coast; their Shakespeare Festival, which sounded lame until we realized it was in gorgeous wine country so who cares; and the National Stock Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, which apparently has something to do with horses.
Paso Robles is a small town nestled in a veritable paradise being promoted by an overeager tourism board. Pretty hard to screw that up.
