Obama Uses Date Night As An Excuse To Play New York Tourist

June 1, 2009 at 9:25 AM | by JetSetCD | 1 Comment

This past weekend, the paparazzi and attentions of New York City were torn two different ways: Britain's Prince Harry played polo on Governor's Island while President Obama had a date night with Michelle up on Broadway.

Both had a touristy mission to enjoy the city in the early summer, but it was Barack's foray into the typical theater dinner date that reminded us that presidents as well as celebrities really are just like us.

Since Obama promised his wife a Broadway show after the conclusion of the election, the pair flew into the city on a smaller plane than Air Force One and then into the city from JFK on Marine One (which probably accounts for all the Blackhawks we saw above the city this weekend). After arriving to the Big Apple, they dined at Greenwich Village's Blue Hill Restaurant, known for its locally-grown fare, and then took in a performance of August Wilson's play Joe Turner's Come and Gone.

The best part of this visit is more than just seeing the president out for a relaxing time with his wife, but also the fact that almost anyone can follow the same itinerary. Reservations at Blue Hill may be difficult, but they are not impossible, and the August Wilson play has tickets available through June 14.

    Not Like Us At All

The president really isn't anything like us. I happened to pass by the the Belasco Theater, 111 West 44th Street, about an hour and half before Barack and Michelle were scheduled to arrive and the block was swarming with police and secret service. They had barricades, sand trucks and police vans blocking off the street. There were secret service in every restaurant, hotel and store on the block, they even had bomb sniffing dogs checking cars in an adjacent parking garage. It was exciting to see (I wish I could have stayed to actually see them arrive) but the last time I went to a Broadway show, no one brought out the bomb sniffing dogs! lol!
