NYC's Governor's Island Is Ready For Its Close-Up

June 2, 2009 at 10:52 AM | by BS | 0 Comments

Forget the five boroughs; this summer's NYC hotspot is a tiny island that most New Yorkers have never even visited.

Wedged between Manhattan and Brooklyn, the 172-acre Governor's Island has long been New York's most underused real estate, but it looks like this bridge-less isle is finally having its moment. We already told you about the island's new drinking spot, but it also has more outdoor activities on offer than ever before, and even Prince Harry played polo there this weekend.

Where: Governor's Island is located Just a few minutes by water taxi from Manhattan's South Ferry boat terminal. Boats leave every half-hour to hour on the weekends. Take the 1 train to the South Ferry stop, the 4/5 to Bowling Green or the R/W to Whitehall Street.

Why: For the first time, visitors can walk or bike around the island's entire 2.2 mile promenade, including by the brand new eight-acre Picnic Point, where sweet views of the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge make this one of New York's best chill spots. You can even bike the island for free on Fridays, when Bike and Roll offers free rentals for one hour-shifts, or it’s just $20 to get a pair of wheels for the whole day.

When: There's something artsy and kooky going on at GI almost every weekend this summer. Grab your bowler hat for the Jazz Age Lawn Party on June 6 and 7, tour the zany sculpture garden at the Figment Art Festival June 12 and 13, or bring the skateboards and safety pins for Punk Island on June 21. With a little something for everyone, the Island totally lives up to New York standards.
