'Mobile-Optimized' Means Business For Southwest Airlines

June 1, 2009 at 11:57 AM | by | Comments (2)

Who remembers the days of booking flights through travel agents with cruise ship models perched on their desks and drawers full of Disney World pamphlets? It's crazy to think that we used to intern at one such office, in the time just before travel websites took over the world and made everyone freak out the security of booking online.

Finally we seemed to have reached the future, what with the proliferation of mobile websites where passengers can not only check on their flight's status but also book another leg. Southwest Airlines is only the latest carrier to boost the options on the mobile-optimized site, adding the ability to purchase flights, view schedules, peruse their SWA frequent flyer points account and of course, monitor their flight's status.

Previously, the rudimentary site only allowed customers to check-in, cancel a flight or view the Terms & Conditions (boring), but the move from laptops to web-enabled cell phones means having more options in-hand. Especially exciting is the instant access to a number for those times you accidentally leave a little something back at the TSA checkpoint, assuming its not your phone you left. Now we only have to anxiously await the day when all airlines move to mobile boarding passes and we aren't freaking out about our printer ink levels within hours of departure.

Southwest Airlines: Late Again on Long Island

Another flight again on Southwest Air, another late arrival in at Long Island Macarthur Airport. I realize that this is a cheap airline, but after all the missed business appointments, and all the missed social engagements, Southest is less about being an airline, and more about just being cheap. Next time, I fly a real airline.
