We remember our visit well, even if it was before our first digital camera, because who could forget descending stairs to find yourself in a ditch underneath a gigantic black locomotive? Not to mention the excellent playground full of airplanes, with a Swissair Coranado CV990 and DC3 open for the peeking. Reserve a good half-day for the museum however, as it boasts five diverse exhibition halls focused on road, rail, air, water, and mountain transport.
Speaking of mountain transport, the Alps and the breathtaking expanse of the Vierwaldstättersee (what we translate as the "Four Forest States' Lake) are just outside of the door, so hopping a ride on a real lake steamer, gondola or cogwheel train almost go hand-in-hand with visiting the city of Lucerne.
If you've only got a couple of days or just feel lazy, the Verkehrshaus will take you up 500 feet in its own tethered air balloon for an extra 20 Swiss Francs. Standard adult museum entrance costs 24F ($21), with reduced admission available for students, children and seniors.
