Hot Peanuts and Beer at the Seattle Mariners Safeco Field

This week Jaunted editor Juliana will be sharing her experiences from a recent field trip to Seattle where she wasn't afraid to do all the touristy things in town. Any questions or tips? Let us know.

We're big fans of checking out the local sports scene when visiting new cities. Going to games gives you an experience that lasts a few hours (while sitting down), involves drinking beer, eating hot peanuts and being loud. Plus it's a great way to see how the locals take pride in their hometown. And it's the one place where you won't feel like a total tourist.

So when we visited Seattle and learned that the Seattle Mariners were playing the Oakland A's, we bought some tickets.

This being rainy Seattle, Safeco Field (Pronounced: Safe-Co) has a retractable roof that covers, but doesn't enclose, the ballpark. The night game we attended was during a downpour so the roof was up which kept everyone nice and dry but it was still cold. Luckily we had with us a hat and the aforementioned hot peanuts and beer.

Getting to the park (and the neighboring Qwest field where the Seahawks play) is relatively simple. We took the 150 bus route from our hotel all the way down to the game and back. Seattle even has Ride Free hours and areas so you might luck out, depending on the game time and where you're coming from. But if you're staying somewhere in downtown Seattle or near Pike Place Market, it's still rather walkable. Provided it's not raining.

However, there is a bunch of construction in front of the ballpark. Police were on hand to direct traffic and pedestrians but the construction sites weren't very well blocked-off. When the herd left the stadium after the game, getting back to the parking lots and the bus stop was unnecessarily confusing. And a tad dangerous, but maybe we're just getting old.

Oh, and about the game--the A's won it.

Insider Tip: The cheapest seats on game day are the bleachers at $8 and $16. But these, naturally, sell out fast. Still, the ballpark is crazy lax about seating. So if you buy a seat up high, after the first few innings you can always make your way down and grab a spot closer to the action.

    How Good?

On the Sweetness Scale, 1 to 10, how sweet is their new park? Just from the pictures it looks like an 8--maybe a 9 with hot peanuts.
