In the middle of the Flinders Ranges, you'll find towns like the cutely-named Quorn, with its looks-like-a-toy Pichi Richi Railway steam train, and there is always the option to take a short climb into the Yourambulla Caves to see Aboriginal art.
The real heart of the Flinders Ranges is however to be found at Wilpena Pound, a section of the range that has formed a natural amphitheater which looks more like a crater left by an enormous meteorite. Scenic flights may be the big excursion up here, but you can also take dozens of short and long hikes to appreciate the stunning views in a more economical fashion.
For resting your head after all that hiking, you've eventually got to trek back to the Wilpena Pound Resort, a one-stop shop with resort accommodation, a campground, tourist info, guides, and the only restaurants for many, many miles around. You'll be glad you came, but you'll also be more appreciative of Thai takeout when you return home.
