JetAmerica Doesn't Skimp on Extra Fees, Expansion Plans

May 29, 2009 at 9:37 AM | by JetSetCD | 3 Comments

It's barely been 48 hours since new Midwest LCC JetAmerica announced their intentions to fly between Toledo, Newark, Minneapolis, South Bend, Lansing and Melbourne, and already the $9 fares for its first few weeks are being snatched up.

But will Jet America last longer than those first few weeks anyways? It is, after all, another airline from the folks behind the former Skybus LCC, who couldn't make it work in Columbus and folded in April 2008 after less than one year in business. Nonetheless, JetAmerica has enough extra fees for them to float on for at least a little while, assuming people want to travel between Toledo and Lansing with surfboards and five cats.

The above breakdown is only a glimpse at the "special services" fees, but we dug into the good old Terms and Conditions of ticket purchase to find the grit that piles up on a $50 roundtrip ticket to make it $90:

· $53.96: Round-trip airfare between Newark and Toledo Express (cheapest option)
· $7.20: Federal Excise Segment Tax
· $5.00: September 11 Security Fee
· $9.00: Passenger Facility Fee
· $10.00: Online Booking Fee
· $4.04: Federal Excise Tax
· $89.20: TOTAL (and we don't even have a reserved seat; that's an extra $6 each way).

We just hope that they'll remember to use our $90 for filling up the airplane's fuel tank, what with all the expansion they have planned. The Toledo Blade reports that in the next two years (if they last that long), Jet America wants to expand to Baltimore, Hartford, and Chicago's Midway Airport. We won't be holding our breath; just let them get through the first few months and then we'll see if they haven't installed treadmills to help power the flight between destinations.

    No $9 fares left?

That would have saved you a lot of moolah. But I guess since there are only nine $9 seats on each flight, it's a tough racket to beat.

    Also, Jet America is pet-friendly!

    It Still Hurts

I am still in pain over the loss of Skybus, so I don't know how quickly I'll jump one of these $9/$90 fares.

Did ya see the news about southwest!

These fees are pretty common these days with all airlines. Have you ever looked at your ticket? Southwest has complained about fees but just added them to their price.
