NYC Gets Three Times the Water Taxi Fun This Summer

May 28, 2009 at 4:42 PM | by BS | 0 Comments

Is it just us, or does New York City get a new great place to drink outside every weekend? Following on the heels of the ever-expanding biergarten scene, New York's quirky Water Taxi Beach experiment is set to get three times bigger this summer.

If you haven't been yet, the original Water Taxi Beach is a strip of sand trucked in to make an artificial beach in Long Island City, Queens. This makeshift beach comes complete with picnic tables and a tiki bar, and is accessible by boat form Midtown Manhattan, giving ocean-starved office drones an easy option to pretend they're downing cold ones in South Beach.

It's a great idea really, but apparently just across the river was still too far for some Manhattanites, so this week they opened a second Water Taxi Beach on the big island itself, right at South Street Seaport. This one's sort of a reverse water taxi commute, because instead of sailing away from Manhattan, you can take the boat from Brooklyn into the City. Manhattan residents can just train or walk it to the new beach, whicnh in addition to cold beers and seafood, includes shore-worthy amenities like Skee-ball and putt-putt.

And that's not it! The water taxi folks are getting ready to open a third Water Taxi Beach, coming to Governor's Island on July 4th. We're never drinking indoors again!
