Bumblehood To Be Yelp Without the Community, Like That'll Work

May 29, 2009 at 11:02 AM | by Omri | 1 Comment

Another community-driven travel resource is entering the fray, and this one seems to be a cross between Yelp and WikiTravel. Bumblehood's goal is to provide full, user-generated travel guides. They're not exactly Yelp because they have "economy" and "history" sections that go beyond Yelp's urban business focus, but they're not WikiTravel either if only because their interface is slicker. Bumblehood is trying to be the best of both worlds, combining WikiTravel's focus on travel guides with Yelp-style business reviews.

There's something refreshing about a business review site that goes beyond Yelp's obsessive focus on friends, user profiles, and "Elite Status." Bumblehood's emphasis is instead on content, which is particularly helpful for travelers who need access to uncluttered information quickly.

Without a community focus like Yelp, however, the question of how Bumblehood is going to get users to contribute is a big issue. Yelp uses their format because it works for their community, giving people that most precious of resources: recognition of one's hipper-than-thou status.

According to Bumblehood's corporate blog, they're very much in the business of creating guides that are not Yelp or Wikipedia:

Webster world dictionary defines a guide as 'a book giving instructions in the elements of some subject', while encyclopedia is defined as 'a book giving information on all branches of knowledge'. When people travel somewhere, they will not take an encyclopedia with them, but rather take the guide to instruct them about the topic and the neighborhood of the topic they are interested in.

The lack of user incentives is particularly problematic because the site is still far, far away from being comprehensive. For example, the section on Eastern Europe—a destination we've pushed on you again and again—has a total of two countries, one of which is Russia. WikiTravel is Bumblehood's closest competitor, and they passed the 20,000 article mark last year. Obviously Bumblehood has some catching up to do, and it's going to be interesting to see how and if they do can it.

    Bumblehood review

Thank you for your review, I believe you gave a fair assessment of the Bumblehood portal. Our CEO wrote a blog post in response to this article (http://www.bumblehood.com/article/E9j_EkBuSyGNjdQpmH-XZQ), explaining the differences between Bumblehood and Yelp.
Also, stay tuned because we have a big update going live at the end of this week - including the test version of the print manager. It will enable all our users to print their own travel guides (custom articles from our content) free of charge.
