Without a community focus like Yelp, however, the question of how Bumblehood is going to get users to contribute is a big issue. Yelp uses their format because it works for their community, giving people that most precious of resources: recognition of one's hipper-than-thou status.
According to Bumblehood's corporate blog, they're very much in the business of creating guides that are not Yelp or Wikipedia:
Webster world dictionary defines a guide as 'a book giving instructions in the elements of some subject', while encyclopedia is defined as 'a book giving information on all branches of knowledge'. When people travel somewhere, they will not take an encyclopedia with them, but rather take the guide to instruct them about the topic and the neighborhood of the topic they are interested in.
The lack of user incentives is particularly problematic because the site is still far, far away from being comprehensive. For example, the section on Eastern Europea destination we've pushed on you again and againhas a total of two countries, one of which is Russia. WikiTravel is Bumblehood's closest competitor, and they passed the 20,000 article mark last year. Obviously Bumblehood has some catching up to do, and it's going to be interesting to see how and if they do can it.
