Jaunted How-To Guide: The Washington Monument

Where: 15th St & Constitution Ave [map], Washington, DC, United States, 20007

Now that the cherry blossoms have come and gone and Screen on the Green is a no-go, it looks like it's back to the classic tourist sites for summer visitors to Washington, DC. First and foremost is the Washington Monument, a zoo of a tourist trap that has led many swearing 'never again.' But, if you can brave the crowds and make it to the top, the view of DC (and almost 30 miles beyond) is really to die for, so it's one of those things that's worth doing once. Luckily, Jaunted has your super-simple guide for how to get to the top:

When: The monument is open 363 days a year (closed on July 4th and Christmas), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Cost: Free! Can you believe it? You should; your tax dollars subsidize it.

The Catch: Ah, you knew there was one, didn't you? To get those free tickets, you've got to show up eeeeeeearly. They start handing out same-day tickets at 8:30 each morning, but the line forms well before that, and on a sunny summer day, you'll want to be there by 7 a.m. to be sure you'll get tix. Each person on line can request up to six.

Alternative: Not sounding like much fun? You can always skip the crowds and take in DC's second-best panoramic views, from the bar at the top of the legendary Hotel Washington, which reopens as a sleek new W Hotel on July 16.
