Spend a 'Night in the Museum' in D.C. This Weekend

May 22, 2009 at 10:59 AM | by cmb | 0 Comments

"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian", the follow up to Ben Stiller's 2006 hit "Night at the Museum", opens across the country today. The movie, set in Washington D.C., was mostly filmed on a Vancouver sound stage. That isn't stopping D.C. from doing its best to capitalize on the potential family tourism dollars the movie can bring in though. Here's a look at the best "Night at the Museum" promotions in D.C. this weekend.

Where to Stay:
The Liaison Capitol Hill is offering a “Day at The Museum in D.C.” package that includes accommodations for one night, a map of Smithsonian museum locations (the museums are free), two all day metro rail passes and two movie theater tickets to see "A Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (or any other movie of your choice). The package starts at $169 a night and can be purchased by calling the hotel at 1-866-246-2203 and mentioning the promo code, MUSEUM.

Where to Eat:
Matchbox Pizza, 713 H Street, NW, is within walking distance of The Mall and has a relaxed atmosphere that welcomes families. Even though it’s a pizza joint, they are known for their sliders, which can be ordered in 3 ($8), 6 ($14) or 9 ($18).

What to See:
DC is celebrating the release of “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” by launching a new promotion highlighting locations featured in the movie. The cornerstone of the program is a new website, Washington.org/night, where visitors can learn about local sites mentioned in the film, like the National Zoo and the National Gallery of Art.

Mount Vernon is also jumping on the movie hype bandwagon by offering special “Night at Mount Vernon” evening tours on May 22-24 and 29-31, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Visitors can tour the grounds of George Washington’s home, lit by lanterns. They’ve even hired actors to jump out of various displays throughout the home's grounds so it appears they are "coming to life", just like they do in the movie. Admission is $15 for adults and $7 for youth ages 6-11 (the same as daytime admission).
