Greece Says Leave Your High Heels At Home

Where: Greece

If you've decided that this is the summer you're going to party in Greece, you'd better check your packing list and take out your high heels.

Officials in Greece are trying to get stiletto heels banned at important archaeological sites because these evil heels are damaging the ancient stuff. To quote Eleni Korka, a director taking care of such ancient sites:

Female visitors must wear shoes that do not wound the monuments. These monuments have a skin that suffers and people must realise that.

Too many tourists is a bit of a problem at many of the ancient sites in Greece - a few years ago they did a big clean-up of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater in Athens and removed 59 pounds of chewing gum stuck under the seats in the process. For some reason they haven't thought of banning chewing gum a la Singapore, but the anti-stiletto movement is growing strong.

    who goes sightseeing in heels?

that just seems miserable and silly to wear stilettos while sightseeing.

    Marble

Many of these ancient monuments are made of smooth, polished marble that can be quite slick, even when dry. I almost busted my ass at the Acropolis, and I was wearing Doc Marten boots with those super soles that are supposed to make you invincible. So if you don't care about damaging the ancient ruins, at least be mindful of your own personal safety and save the FMP's for the nightclubs.

    Here, here!

Oddly, I saw quite a few ladies in stilettos at the Acropolis in Athens. Given the rough terrain, I'd say that stilettos are probably more harmful to the wearer than the Acropolis. I would probably break my leg.

    Chewing Gum!??!

What kind of self respecting person would put gum under the marble seat of a 2,500 year old theater? If you don't respect yourself, at least respect others' historical treasures.

You'd be surprised - or maybe not

But the people who leave chewing gum under 2500 year old marble seats are in the same class as those who take or deface petroglyphs, steal petrified wood from national and hauled off everything they could dig up and drag away from Stonehenge.
