Baggage Fee Lowdown: Continental Airlines

May 15, 2009 at 12:06 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Checked baggage allowances make our heads hurt, and often in those critical few hours before a flight as we bounce to close our suitcase. To put minds at ease and clarify all the charts out there, all week long at Jaunted we will be detailing what it costs to check your bags and get on board. Got any suggestions or tips? Let us know.

Continental's Domestic Routes (within United States and Canada):
Thus far, Continental hasn't caved in to upping their fees, but we still have to pay them. That is, unless you are First or BusinessFirst, OnePass Elite, traveling on full-fare economy (Y) class tickets, or active military personnel. All the rest of us in cheap-o economy will have to pay:
· $15 for your first checked bag.
· $25 for your second bag.
· Extra dollars if you check more than 2 bags, exceed 50 lbs per bag, go over 62 inches all around each bag, or you're hauling a special item like a totem pole or harp.

Continental's International Routes (except Brazil, more on that later):
As with any international flight, plan to arrive at the airport early enough to check your bags at least 45 minutes prior to departure. Just don't let the weird ways of Continental's baggage policies get you stuck. Here's the specifics:
· Economy Class, if traveling to Mexico, Caribbean, and Central and South America (excluding Brazil), will be allowed to check the first bag free and the second bag at a cost of $25, assuming each bag is under 50lbs and 62 linear inches. Everywhere else international will allow you to check those two bags for free.
· OnePass Elite in Economy still are only permitted to check 2 bags for free, each measuring no more than 62 linear inches. However, the weight limit of each increases to 70lbs.
· First Class and Business Class are allowed 3 checked pieces free of charge with a weight limit of 70lbs each, measuring 62 linear inches.
· Military personnel may check 3 military bags of 70lbs and 115 linear inches, or 3 non-military style bags of 70lbs and 62 linear inches for free.

Continental's International Flights to Brazil:
Refer to the international piece and size limits above, but relax knowing that all bags for all classes are allowed to be 70lbs each.
