Richard Branson's 'No Way BA-AA' Campaign Gets Personal

May 14, 2009 at 12:21 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

In a saga that now spans a decade, Virgin CEO Richard Branson is again ramping up his criticism of the proposed merger of American Airlines and British Airways. This time, however, it's personal.

In a statement made at The National Press Club in Washington DC, Sir Richard warned against the merger's adverse affects on employees and passengers, especially those really feeling the recession:

Our arguments are as strong today as they were on the previous two occasions when BA and AA tried to merge. Their dominance has grown even further between then and now. The latest BA/AA application isn’t about what the industry wants. It’s about what the consumer needs. It should not be decided on emotion or past letters of support. It should be decided on true facts. When this recession is over, we need an industry we can be proud of. An industry that promotes competition, creates jobs and brings real benefits to consumers.

With the decision on the merger nearing and the Open Skies Agreement failing to provide enough protection, Virgin Atlantic is encouraging more people to send letters to the US Department of Transportation voicing their opinions on the matter. A single glance at VA's fact sheet on the possibly consequences of such a deal is enough to scare the bejesus out of budget-minded air travelers, let alone those favoring healthy competition among airlines.

If taking up arms with Richard Branson is what we have to do to keep JFK-LHR specials cheaper than some coast-to-coast flights, then we'll break out the chain maille; he wasn't knighted by the Queen for nothing, after all.
