In order to quickly outfit all 136 AirTran planes by the end of this summer, the airline has signed on with Aircell's Gogo WiFi, a popular choice as it's already worked out deals to fly the friendly, connected skies on Virgin America, Delta, American, United, and in the future on Air Canada. Currently these airlines have stuck to offering WiFi on their cash cow routes like JFK to SFO and LAX, but AirTran's fleetwide decision blows the field wide open.
Luckily with Gogo, we can already be sure of the pricing for using the in-flight internet, as their rates are plainly set out on their website: $12.95 for flights 3+ hours, $9.95 for flights less than 3 hours, and only $7.95 for connecting using a mobile device, such as a smartphone, on any length flight.
So who'll be Twittering and updating their Facebook status from 35,000' now? Vacationers heading from Indianapolis to Sarasota, or weary business travelers on the Phoenix to Milwaukee direct will soon all have the same rights to in-flight internet and will probably livestream themselves sitting on the plane. Even though that is perhaps the most boring thing ever, we're totally cool with it so long as it means that perhaps one day, while on the random AirTran NYC-LaGuardia to Canton, Ohio flight, we can finally get around to sending a braggy life update email to all of our friends.
