AirTran Blows the Field Wide Open With Fleetwide In-Flight WiFi

May 12, 2009 at 8:51 AM | by JetSetCD | 5 Comments

Remember last month when AirTran launched their online comment box, asking for passenger submissions on what cool stuff the airline could do to win you over? Well, after more than 30,000 submissions and several weeks of anxious wait time, today the announcement came through: Fleetwide WiFi this summer!

Yes folks, this is the moment we've all been waiting for; airlines are in something of a race to equip themselves with the sweet, sweet internet and we're all set to reap the benefits. You may now access your approved electronic devices and conduct business as normal.

In order to quickly outfit all 136 AirTran planes by the end of this summer, the airline has signed on with Aircell's Gogo WiFi, a popular choice as it's already worked out deals to fly the friendly, connected skies on Virgin America, Delta, American, United, and in the future on Air Canada. Currently these airlines have stuck to offering WiFi on their cash cow routes like JFK to SFO and LAX, but AirTran's fleetwide decision blows the field wide open.

Luckily with Gogo, we can already be sure of the pricing for using the in-flight internet, as their rates are plainly set out on their website: $12.95 for flights 3+ hours, $9.95 for flights less than 3 hours, and only $7.95 for connecting using a mobile device, such as a smartphone, on any length flight.

So who'll be Twittering and updating their Facebook status from 35,000' now? Vacationers heading from Indianapolis to Sarasota, or weary business travelers on the Phoenix to Milwaukee direct will soon all have the same rights to in-flight internet and will probably livestream themselves sitting on the plane. Even though that is perhaps the most boring thing ever, we're totally cool with it so long as it means that perhaps one day, while on the random AirTran NYC-LaGuardia to Canton, Ohio flight, we can finally get around to sending a braggy life update email to all of our friends.

    Slightly Disappointed

Ya, WiFi is awesome, but I was just hoping for something totally random and unnecessary--like massage chairs or air hockey tables in the galley.

    First?

Does this make them first in the US to go fleet wide with WiFi? Thinking yes. Or will Delta or VA get it done before AirTran?

    Dunno

I have kind of wondered that myself. But, I think AirTran has done a great marketing job with keeping it pretty secret they were getting it going and then being the first to say they are going to have fleet-wide wifi.

If anything hopefully this forces other airlines to follow suit.

    woo-hoo!

This is great news! Just anothe reason why I love AirTran and think they're totally overrated. You just can't beat a $5 business class upgrade, it works almost everytime! Loves it.
