Exploring DC's Sweet Side

April 8, 2009 at 4:26 PM | by | Comment (1)

In our continuing quest to find things to do in DC if the Obamas won't take your meeting, this week we're looking at the District's best desserts.

Cupcakes: Yes, we know, we've already declared cupcakes so over, but that doesn't mean we can physically handle walking down U Street without stopping at Cakelove for some of their famous buttercream-frosted deliciousness. Seriously, these up there with the best.

Chocolate: Greek tapas restaurant Zaytinya is worth visiting for a full meal, but chocoholics should make sure to leave room for the Turkish Coffee Chocolate dessert—warm chocolate cake topped with chocolate flan and espresso syrup.

Healthy (kind of): Many a dairy-lover has been fooled by the goods at vegan bakery Sticky Fingers. From cheesecake to brownies to cinnamon buns, this Columbia Heights favorite provides sweet treats for the animal-product-free set, and the results are tasty enough that even the non-health-conscious will approve.

For Foodies: Acclaimed chef Jose Andres' mini bar offers the Capitol's craziest molecular gastronomy creations, but sweet tooths should be sure not to miss the desserts. Tiny morsels of food like saffron gumdrops and maracuya marshmallows sure don't look like much, but they burst more flavor in your mouth than seems possible.

Cakelove's horrible

Cakelove is terrible. And when you complain about shelling out for a cupcake that goes down like a cinderblock, they tell you you're eating it wrong. When I stayed at the Ritz-Carton Georgetown a few weeks ago, it had Georgetown Cupcakes waiting for us. Now those were excellent--and didn't even need eating instructions. Hello Cupcake in Dupont Circle is also great.
