Despite North Korea's Test, Umbrella Drinks in Hawaii Remain Safe

April 6, 2009 at 9:11 AM | by | Comment (1)

In case you don’t pay attention to the news over the weekend—we barely do—North Korea launched a long-range rocket. Their government insists that the launch was simply an attempt to get a communication satellite into orbit, but everyone else thinks that they want to know how far they can get a missile to go.

This test was pretty much a failure according to US officials, and both phases of the rocket fell into the ocean near Japan without making it to orbit. We’re not going to get into the political issues about this launch, but we do want to talk about how it may affect your travel plans for a tropical vacation.

If you’re not too good with geography, take a look at Google Maps. Hawaii is pretty close, relatively speaking, to North Korea, and the island state is somewhat concerned about these rocket tests. In 2006, the last time North Korea held a test, reports had the path of that rocket’s remains heading toward the waters of Hawaii. This time the state seems to be fine, but they’re likely to remain a little more concerned than those on the mainland.

Prior to the launch, Secretary Gates insisted that the US had things under control, and stated that the government was prepared to handle things just in case something was headed toward Hawaii. Thankfully, no action was needed. We don’t want to be accused of fear mongering, but we do want to let you know if anything threatens your beach Mai Tai.

Good Post

I got to be honest, we are getting ready to head to Hawaii and that makes me a little nervous. Obviously the chances are low that you will be in a bad situation, but you never know. North Korea is pretty nuts!
