Does Anybody Else Remember the Old "If You Had Wings" Ride at Disney World?

April 4, 2009 at 3:30 PM | by Victor Ozols | 8 Comments

The internet really is an amazing thing. Last week, for some reason, I was thinking about an obscure old ride at Disney World that I doubted many people remembered. Lo and behold, a quick search revealed not only extensive information about it, but a couple of first-person videos as well. The ride was called If You Had Wings, and it was essentially a big advertisement for Eastern Air Lines, which was, at one time, the official airline of Walt Disney World. My dad was a pilot for Eastern Air Lines, and so we made a point of riding the Claude Coates-designed Omnimover Dark Ride whenever we went to the park, and I loved it.

Watching the videos really brought me back, triggering all sorts of fond childhood memories. It's been decades, but I've never forgotten that mesmerizing Buddy Baker/X Atencio theme song that went "If you had wings, you could do all these things, you could widen your world if you had wings, had wings, had wings." There's just something about that sound that makes you want to play along with the fantasy.

The ride was pretty simple. The music would play as you sat in these plastic pod things that moved through dark rooms with rear-projected movies of happy travel scenes: a guy shimmying under a limbo stick, a straw hat vendor in some tropical paradise, a fisherman posing next to his trophy catch, a Bermudian traffic cop directing both cars and flamingos, a woman shaking her maracas in front of a Mexican band. Idyllic versions of a travel myth that we were all to eager to embrace. They were like vintage travel posters come to life. Visit Sunny Puerto Rico! Now, I'm one of those people who believes that there's no such thing as the good old days, because every day is good when you're young, but watching this, I can't help but feel like life was simpler then. What I'd give to relive those halcyon 1970's moments, delusions and all.

If You Had Wings is long gone, as is Eastern Air Lines, which ceased operations in 1991, ending another era entirely. The space is now occupied by Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, which is probably a lot more popular, if less retro. But as I was saying, thank God for the internet, because if it wasn't for that, I'd having nothing more than my faded memories of this magnificent ride. So, does anyone else remember If You Had Wings?

Detailed look at "If You Had Wings"

If you like (or miss) If You Had Wings, I take a trip aboard my "Walt Disney World Wayback Machine", and examine this extinct attraction from the Magic Kingdom. I explore the history, trivia, and complete journey aboard If You Had Wings. I also look at its replacements, including Delta's Dreamflight and more. It's a lot of fun and will likely bring back some old memories. You can listen to the show and read the show notes here: WDW Radio Show Disney Podcast #37 - If You Had Wings

    Don't forget Delta Dreamflight

Before Buzz Lightyear took over (and after "If You Had Wings"), there was Delta Dreamflight in the same spot. It was essentially the same attraction as IYHW, but with some minor updates and rebranding to fit with Delta airlines. Either way, I absolutely loved the attraction, particularly once you got into the omnisphere-esque movie portion of the ride. Though gone, it wouldn't really fit into the current retrofuturism theme of Tomorrowland. But, at least there's now Soarin' over at Epcot, which provides a similar - and even better - simulated flight experience.

    One of my favorites..

I loved IYHW. Even though it was a simple ride, IYHW was great. It inspired me to travel the world. The People Mover was another great ride. Does that one still exist?

    Delta Dreamflight

Actually there was even a brief period in between "If you had wings" and Buzz where it was owned by Delta and was called Dreamflight or something like that. It had the same layout and "cars" but the scenes were all different ... oh wait did I just totally date myself :-)

We used to love this ride!

we used to go to Disney once a year, back when traveling to Florida from New York seemed like the most exotic thing in the world... this was one of our favorite rides! I had forgotten all about the cop with the flamingos - we used to hope that the car would pause in front of that scene so we could watch it longer! www.constantholiday.blogspot.com

Ah, the heady days of cross-promotion

I miss the grand old days of first class cros promotion. Gone are the days when we could see an airline promoted in a theme park ride, and now we're relegated to such things as toasters that run at low medium, 'Pop Tarts' and high. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind a little cross-promotion if it saves me a few $$$ but maybe if Disney brought back rides like this, they could bring their ticket prices down to reasonable levels.

    Amazing!

After all the time spent at Walt Disney World on holiday during the 70s and 80s, that was the _one_ attraction I never was able to experience. Now, my life is complete. :)

    If You Had Wings

I was thinking of that ride the whole time I was at Disneyland in CA. I greatly miss that ride from Disneyworld.
